An American cargo plane attempting to land at Dubai’s airport instead crashed nearby Friday, setting some cars on fire and killing several people, Al Arabiya television reported.
Ambulances were rushing to the area, located near a residential district, the station added. It did not report the model of aircraft or its size. The dead were thought to be the cargo plane’s crew. A large section of the plane was visibly on fire before it crashed.
Al Arabiya said the plane crashed on a highway, but the UAE’s news agency said it was an unpopulated area. In October 2009, a Sudanese Boeing 707 cargo plane crashed in the desert outside Dubai, killing six crew members. UAE regulators have banned the plane’s Sudanese owner from operating in the country.

Thirteen Palestinian militant groups have joined forces to step up attacks on Israel following the productive peace talks in Washington. The threat came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas agreed to meet every fortnight to structure a peace deal.
A spokesman for Hamas, which was not involved in the talks, said 13 militant groups in the Gaza Strip would work together to launch more effective attacks against Israel. Asked if this included suicide bombings, he said: All options are open.
Hamas has claimed responsibility for two shootings in the West Bank this week that killed four Israeli settlers and wounded two. Mr Netanyahu and Mr Abbas have been holding the first direct negotiations between the two parties in nearly two years. US Middle East envoy Senator George Mitchell said the first round of talks were held in good faith and with a seriousness of purpose. Calling the initial discussions long and productive, he added that the men have agreed to meet again on September 14 and 15 in the region – and then every two weeks.
Mexican Clash ‘kills 27 Gunmen’: The Mexican army says it has killed 27 suspected drug cartel gunmen in a clash near the US border. A reconnaissance flight over Ciudad Mier in Tamaulipas state spotted several gunmen in front of a property, according to a statement from Mexico’s defence department. When troops on the ground moved in, gunmen opened fire, starting a gunbattle that killed 25 suspected cartel members, according to the military. The statement said two soldiers were injured but none were killed. Earlier, a military spokesman had said the shootout happened when troops on patrol in neighbouring Nuevo Leon state came under fire from a ranch allegedly controlled by the Zetas drug gang.
The spokesman said the troops returned fire at a ranch, known as ‘The Stump’. A defence department statement later said the shootout took place in Tamaulipas. Authorities rescued three people believed to be kidnap victims in the raid, according to the statement. The military said troops seized 25 rifles, four grenades, 4,200 rounds of ammunition and 23 vehicles. Violence has surged in northeastern Mexico this year since the Zetas broke ranks with their former employer, the Gulf cartel, making Tamaulipas one of the country’s most dangerous battlegrounds. In June, gunmen ambushed and killed the leading candidate for state governor a week before the elections. And in May a mayoral candidate in Tamaulipas was assassinated.
In August, Mexican marines discovered the bodies of 72 Central and South American migrants believed to have been gunned down by the Zetas after refusing to smuggle drugs, in what may be the deadliest cartel massacre to date. The dead migrants were discovered at a ranch about 100km from the US border in Tamaulipas. The Zetas began as a gang of drug assassins but have since evolved into a powerful cartel. Drug violence has claimed more than 28,000 lives since Mexican president Felipe Calderon intensified a crackdown on cartels after taking office in late 2006.
